Biography of Reverend Father Hovel Ohanyan
Rev. Fr. Hovel Ohanyan was born on May 28, 1978 in Ashtarak (County of Aragadzotn), Armenia. His baptismal name was Artak. He received his general education (1985- 1995) in the local school #5 named after Norayr Sisakyan. Following graduation he studied for a short time in the faculty of Journalism at the Yerevan State University.
In 1996 he was called to serve the mandatory military service for the Republic of Armenia for two years. The primary location of his service was in the neighboring regions of Ijevan, bordering Azerbaijan.
He was admitted to the Kevorkian Theological Seminary of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin in 1999 where he studied for six years.
On December 24, 2004 on the feast day of St. Stephan Pro-Martyr (pro-deacon) he was ordained a deacon by Bishop Ezras Nersesian. Following graduation from Kevorkian Seminary he was assigned as a controller in the same facility for a short period of time.
In 2005 His Holiness Karekin II Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of all Armenians appointed Fr. Hovel as secretary in the Foreign Relations Department of the Mother See.
On March 14, 2006 Fr. Hovel successfully completed his dissertation on “The Connotative Classification of the Religio-Ecclesiastical Glossary (The names of the Ecclesiastical Books)” with the highest grade.
On April 15, 2007 at the Cathedral of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin he was ordained as a priest by Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America.
On June 14, 2007 Rev. Fr. Hovel Ohanyan moved to the United States and started to serve in the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America in concurrence with the assignment of Karekin II Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians. On July 26, 2007 Archbishop Hovnan Derderian assigned Fr. Hovel as the visiting pastor of Santa Clarita parish.
On October 14, 2007 Rev. Fr. Hovel Ohanyan was assigned by Archbishop Hovnan Derderian as the parish priest for the two mission parishes of Ventura County and Santa Barbara. On July 1, 2009 Rev. Fr. Hovel Ohanyan was assigned and on July 11, 2009 was installed as the parish priest of St. Vartan Armenian Apostolic Church, Oakland, CA by Abp. Hovnan Derderian, primate of the Western Diocese.
From 2008 to 2009 Fr. Hovel continued his theological education at "St. John Catholic Seminary," Camarillo, CA.
In 2010 Fr. Hovel continued his education at "Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute," Berkeley, CA, He graduated in 2015 with a Masters in Orthodox Theology.
Rev. Fr. Hovel Ohanyan and his spouse Yeretsgin Anahit Ohanyan are blessed with three children; Vazgen, Nareh, and Nazeni.
